Behind every successful business, there are the people who make it all possible. At NGR Accounting, one of those people is Belinda, affectionately known as “The Gatekeeper.”
Belinda joined NGR back in May 2018, starting out just a few days a week. Fast forward seven years, and she’s now an integral part of our team, stepping into a new role, preparing tax returns and helping clients directly. Her journey is a perfect reminder of what it takes to grow a business and why culture, trust, and letting go matter more than you think.
Why Delegation is Non-Negotiable
When you’re starting a business, it’s tempting to do everything yourself. It feels safer. It feels like you’re in control. But the truth? That mindset is what holds many business owners back.
Belinda put it best:
“You can’t keep it all to yourself. You have to delegate, otherwise it’s never going to work.”
Bringing Belinda on board freed me from the mountain of admin tasks and allowed me to focus on growth. For other business owners, this is the turning point, when you realise your time is better spent on strategy and clients, not chasing paperwork.
Culture Starts at the Top
One of the biggest lessons in business is that culture doesn’t just “happen.” It comes from the top.
Toxic workplaces create high staff turnover. Positive cultures, built on respect and fairness, create loyalty. That’s why at NGR Accounting, we’ve always tried to build a workplace where people actually want to be. From monthly massage days to EOFY parties, but more importantly, through open communication and genuine respect.
Belinda summed it up perfectly:
“You spend more time at work than you do at home, so culture matters. You need to enjoy the people you work with.”
Growing into New Roles
When Belinda started, she was “The Gatekeeper” — answering phones, managing systems, and keeping the office running smoothly. But as the business evolved, so did her role.
Over the years, she’s built up a wealth of knowledge, and now she’s stepping into the role of tax preparer, helping clients directly with returns, capital gains, rental property schedules, and more.
It wasn’t a role she planned on, but as Belinda says:
“Knowledge is power. If you don’t keep learning, you become stale.”
That growth mindset has made her an incredible asset to the team and a reminder that the best employees are the ones who are willing to learn, adapt, and step up.
Lessons for Every Business Owner
Belinda’s story isn’t just about one employee. It’s about the principles that help any business grow:
- You can’t do everything. Let go of control and trust your team.
- Culture matters. Build a workplace where people want to stay.
- People are your greatest asset. Skills can be taught, attitude can’t.
- Encourage growth. When staff step up, the whole business moves forward.
At NGR Accounting, we often say: “There’s no I in team.” Belinda’s journey is proof of that.
Congratulations, Belinda
On behalf of the entire NGR team and myself, huge congratulations to Belinda on officially stepping into her new role. You’ve been the backbone of so much of what we do, and it’s exciting to see you grow into this next stage of your career.
Your dedication, organisation, and commitment to learning have not only supported me personally but also brought immense value to our clients. We’re lucky to have you, and I can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes you.
